Research Topics

What Interests Me?

Reading Home Fire has brought up several interesting questions in my mind. I am very unfamiliar with Islam and its associated culture, so I've been Googling and researching a lot of the terms and language used throughout the book. However, these have been fairly small searches and not large enough topics for a research excursion. Of what I've looked up, there are a couple contenders for my research excusrion topic.

Modesty in Islam

My top contender for excursion topic is modesty laws in Islam, specifically the hijab. While I know some basic information, it would be interesting to learn more about how the rules differ between cultures. Even in the Pasha household alone, Isma's choice to take off her hijab was much more thought-out and significant than Aneeka's. In addition, the large contrast between the American and British Muslims' attire and those in Syria, where women covered their entire body with only a small window so that they could see.

Daily Prayers

My second potential choice of topic is the daily prayers that are a part of Islam. They have been touched on before, such as when Aneeka prays daily at dawn or Isma's praying at several times during the day. There were also mentions of towers in Syria that called people to pray, which I would look into, assuming that they are in some way closely connected with the daily prayers.

  1. I also find the modestly laws in Islam, as well as the different interpretations of them, very interesting. I had not thought of this for a research topic, but I am sure there is a ton of helpful information on this that would be very cool to look into.

  2. Islam is a very interesting topic to study in general. from what I have learned and studied after taking world religion and cultures courses, I have seen that Islam tends to be a very strict religion given that they believe God has sent his last prophet Mohammad and humanity must follow his laws in order to go to heaven. It would be cool to link this back to the idea of Isma taking off her hijab and the implications of that action.
