Intertextuality

Potential Topic

Of the potential topics, I am considering the tragic lovers theme, based on Antigone. To be more specific, stories in which one lover's death/potential death results in the death or suicide of the other. The most obvious text following this theme is Romeo and Juliet, but there are countless stories based off of both Romeo and Juliet and Antigone written from various cultures that would be interesting to examine.

It should be fairly easy to find books centered around this theme, as Romeo and Juliet is a very popular literary allusion.

The other topic I'm considering is the theme of parent-child inheritence found in Home Fire. While this one may be a bit more difficult to research, it's more interesting to me as it relates to two texts that I've previously read and thoroughly enjoyed (Falsettos and A Doll's House). If I can find the sources and other examples of the theme, I think that this theme would be most enjoyable for me to research.

Format

Regardless of my topic, I plan on using Neatline for my project. As the texts I use will span different locations and time periods, Neatline will do a good job of showing how different the texts are. It will also allow for better linking to outside media (pictures, videos, etc.) if I want to use other media to illustrate the presence of my chosen topic.

  1. The tragic lovers topic is a really cool idea. I feel like there was a story that was mentioned in Home Fire that also had the tragic lovers theme. I'm not 100% sure, but it might be worth looking into if you're in need of more texts.

    1. The text Bailey is referring to is Layla and Majnun--a tragic love story from Persia. Keep in mind that your research should lead you to new texts and new cultures, not ones you already know. So your focus should be on a topic that interests you rather than one you can find texts for (we will make sure you can find texts no matter what). If you think about it this way, what topic do you most want to do?

    2. These are both such a great ideas for a research theme! I love that you mentioned A Doll's House- that is by far one of my favorite plays! If you end up using it in your research, you should look into A Doll's House Part 2- Its also really good and I think it was written relatively recently.

  4. Those seem like such fascinating topics to do research on! I am sure that there are many adaptations of Romeo and Juliet or the tragic lovers theme out there! My best friend has a comic book adaptation of Romeo and Juliet that was written within the last 10 years and it is really interesting!
